Driving your own car across the country during a relocation sounds simple until you factor in fuel, tolls, two days of your time, hotel stops, and the wear on the vehicle. For most interstate moves, a carrier is cheaper and considerably less exhausting.
What it costs
| Service | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Bike transport (local, within Lucknow) | ₹1,200 – ₹2,200 |
| Car transport (local, within Lucknow) | ₹2,500 – ₹4,000 |
| Bike — Lucknow to Delhi NCR | ₹3,500 – ₹6,000 |
| Car — Lucknow to Delhi NCR | ₹8,000 – ₹14,000 |
| Car — Lucknow to Mumbai / Bangalore | ₹15,000 – ₹25,000 |
Ranges depend on the vehicle's size, whether the carrier is open or closed, the route, and how flexible your dates are. An SUV costs more than a hatchback; a dedicated closed carrier costs more than a shared open one.
Open versus closed carrier
- Open carrier — the standard multi-car trailer you see on highways. Cheaper and widely available. Your vehicle is exposed to dust and weather but is secured properly. Fine for most cars.
- Closed / enclosed carrier — a covered container. Costs noticeably more but protects against dust, rain, stone chips and prying eyes. Worth it for luxury, vintage or newly delivered vehicles.
For bikes, a closed container with proper wheel chocks and soft straps is strongly preferable — two-wheelers are far easier to scratch and topple than cars.
Never accept "we will just ride it there." Some low-cost operators move bikes by having someone ride them across states. This adds hundreds of kilometres to your odometer, risks traffic violations in your name, and voids most damage claims.
Documents you need
- Registration Certificate (RC) — original or a clear copy
- Valid insurance certificate
- Valid PUC certificate
- Owner's photo ID
- A signed vehicle condition report at handover
- For interstate movement, the carrier handles the e-way bill and permits — but confirm they are doing it
Prepare the vehicle before handover
- Wash it. Existing scratches are invisible under dirt, which is precisely how damage disputes start.
- Photograph every panel in daylight, plus the roof, bumpers, alloys and windscreen. Timestamp the photos.
- Keep fuel low — roughly a quarter tank. Carriers usually require this for weight and safety.
- Remove all personal belongings. Items left in the car are not covered by transit insurance.
- Remove or retract accessories — spoilers, antennas, dashcams, toll tags where possible.
- Note the odometer reading and photograph it.
- Disable the alarm or explain it to the driver.
- Hand over one key only and keep the spare.
Transit times from Lucknow
- Delhi NCR — typically 2 to 3 days
- Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj and other UP cities — 1 to 2 days
- Mumbai, Pune — 5 to 7 days
- Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai — 6 to 9 days
These assume a shared carrier, which waits until it has a full load. A dedicated carrier is faster and costs more. Monsoon and festival periods add delay.
At delivery — the five minutes that matter
Do not let the driver leave until you have:
- Inspected every panel in good light against your handover photographs
- Checked the roof — the most commonly missed area
- Verified the odometer against the noted reading
- Started the engine and checked electricals
- Noted any damage on the delivery receipt before signing
A signed clean receipt is treated as confirmation that the vehicle arrived undamaged. Once signed, a claim becomes very difficult regardless of what you find later.
Does insurance cover transit?
Your own motor policy generally does not cover damage while the vehicle is being carried on a truck. The carrier's transit insurance is what applies. Ask for the policy details, the declared value, and the claim process in writing before handover.
