How to Choose Packers and Movers in Lucknow (Without Getting Cheated)

Relocation is one of the few services where you hand strangers everything you own and hope for the best. Most movers are honest. A minority are not, and the pattern of complaints is remarkably consistent. Knowing that pattern protects you.

Verify the company actually exists

Many listings are brokers, not movers. They take your booking, take a commission, and hand the job to whoever is cheapest that day — which is why the crew that arrives often has no connection to the brand you called.

• Ask for the GST number and verify it on the government GST portal. A registered business has a verifiable identity.
• Ask for a physical office address — not just a mobile number. Visit it, or at minimum check it on Google Maps.
• Check that the phone number is answered in the company's name. A broker answers generically.
• Look for a real Google Business Profile with photos and reviews that mention specific locality names and dates.

Insist on a written, itemised quote

A verbal price is not a quote. The written document should state, at minimum:

• Vehicle type and size
• Crew size
• Packing material grade and whether it is included
• Whether loading, unloading, dismantling and reassembly are included
• Floor and long-carry charges, if any
• Transit insurance option and premium
• GST treatment — inclusive or exclusive
• Expected transit time

If a company resists putting this in writing, that is your answer.

Understand what transit insurance really covers

"Fully insured" on a website means very little on its own. Ask directly:

• Is it full-value protection or a limited liability capped at a small amount per kilogram?
• What is excluded? Owner-packed cartons are commonly excluded.
• What is the claim process, and who files it — you or the mover?
• Is there a declared value inventory, and did you sign it?

Insurance without a signed inventory of declared value is close to meaningless, because there is no agreed record of what was handed over.

Read reviews properly

Review counts are easy to inflate. Signal comes from detail, not volume:

• Genuine reviews mention specific localities, dates and item types — "shifted from Vibhuti Khand to Aliganj, the glass dining table arrived fine".
• Be sceptical of clusters of five-star reviews posted within a few days of each other in near-identical language.
• Read the negative reviews and, more importantly, how the company responded. A professional response to a genuine complaint tells you more than a hundred perfect scores.

The survey is not optional

Any mover quoting a firm price for a full household without seeing it — physically or over video — is guessing. That guess gets corrected upward on loading day, when your things are already half in the truck and you cannot walk away.

A proper survey records volume, fragile items, large appliances, furniture that needs dismantling, floor and lift access, and truck parking distance. Those are exactly the variables that change the price.

Questions worth asking before you commit

1. Are the crew your own employees, or subcontracted for the day?
2. Will the same vehicle carry my goods door to door, or will there be transhipment?
3. Can I get the driver's contact and track the vehicle?
4. What happens if my new flat's possession is delayed — do you offer storage, and at what cost?
5. Who is my single point of contact on moving day?
6. What is your process if something is damaged?

Protect yourself on moving day

• Photograph valuable items before packing, with timestamps.
• Keep an inventory and check it at both ends.
• Carry jewellery, documents, cash and medicines yourself. No exceptions.
• Do not sign a blank or unread delivery receipt. Note any visible damage on it before signing.
• Pay through traceable means and get a receipt for every payment.
